University accused of £36m student scam

Governors urged to quit after college falsely claimed for thousands of undergraduates

The body which funds English universities has taken the unprecedented step of calling for the mass resignation of governors at a university accused of misusing public money.

A letter seen by The Independent from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce) to the chairman of governors at London Metropolitan University calls on members of the governing body and senior staff to "consider their position".

  1. The corruption is deeper than just the senior managers. Some years ago I raised a serious matter with Business School managers which tirned out to be one of corruption. I wasn't prepared for the response. It clearly showed there was widespread corruption. The issue I first raised was the hideous nature of books written by colleague, Humphrey Shaw, which he sold directly to students in classes. The books were flawed beyond reasonable belief, utterly hideous, in places grotesque. The response from Frank Blewett (retired), Jean Fawcett (now pro-VC), the acting VC (a woman..I forget her name, later Brian Roper, Stuart Cole (now at Glamorgan), Paul Joyce (Now Nottingham Trent), Sue Tootoonchian (S/L Lomdon Met), Denise Naylor (now LBMS, ex regent's college etc.) was a vicious personal attack (Fawcett had much earlier asked Blewett and others to find a way to get rid of me, simply because she didn't like me...I had criticised her for lowering standards (among other failings)). It has taken about 15 years for it to be fully accepted London Met has low standards. ). Unless still teaches in the business school. He has been promoted! On the evidence of his books he it utterly incompetent. In places he fails to demonstrate basic language and numeracy skills at a level one would expect of a child.

  2. Errata:
In my earlier post at 17:49 I wrote "Unless still teaches". I meant "Humphrey Shaw still teaches. Apologies for a couple of other typos.

  3. Rob Slack, will you please stop using every single website you can find that even mentions London Met to assassinate some poor individual's character/professional integrity. I don't know you or Humphrey Shaw but I do know which one of you needs to seek professional help. Please take my advice and just stop now. All you're showing us with this bile barrage is how bitter and twisted you are, and we sure as heck don't need any more commentators with that particular illness.

    1. Given your lack of knowledge, it was unwise for you to form conclusions. Maybe if you just read some of Shaw's work you would see my point.

Without knowledge of issues you cannot expect to be seen as credible. It would help if you were courteous enough to identify yourself, instead of hiding as "anonymous".

  4. Further to my earlier posts, I should make clear Cole, Joyce, Tootoonchian and Naylor were not directly involved in the personal attack. They played support roles in the middle stages.

And I note I made at least one more typo, so I'll give up apologising for them!

  5. To Anonymous.

I don't know who you are, you didn't say. However from what you wrote I think it fair to assume you have no knowledge of the facts of the matter I have raised.

Take your advice? Why should I take advice from someone I do not who makes such strong statements in complete ignorance of facts?

Are you really unaware, or someone who has been made to feel uncomfortable and so chooses to remain anonymous?

My apologies to the blog owner and other readers for using the blog in this peripheral way but I felt it reasonable to respond to anonymous's criticism.

  7. Ever Loved

If you were a student of Shaw's you have a right to complain. Those who are not aware of the facts may think I am slightly crazy. I am not. Bitter and twisted? No twisted, but very bitter. If you are able to pass a link to this to other studenst it would be helpful; I know there were many who wanted to complain but were (reasonably) afriad to do so.

  9. It seems THES is unwilling to allow me to post, they have deleted my posting. If you wish to read it you can Google "humphrey shaw slack long goodbye" and select CACHED, which appears just below the short abstract. I don't know how long it will remain in the Google cache, so be quick!
